Pushing the Limits

Why has extreme sports attracted so much attention over the last few years. I personally feel that it has always been there, it is just relative to the era and what was available. The first explorers, adventurers, climbers and divers pushed the limits of what was known at that time, challenging themselves, the terrain and their knowledge and experience. Very similar to what extreme sports do now, pushing the limits; not only of themselves but of the best technology available. All performers, participants and competitors in any extreme activity will experience the addictive adrenaline rush that accompanies such sports and activities. It is this rush that pushes us all to feel the thrill of what we are doing but also to do it to the best of our ability, that which is enhanced by the surge of adrenaline. Experience in any sport or activity is about knowing how to control this ‘rush’ to have it enhance performance not incapacitate it.

Adrenaline Rush – for me, it is that pounding in my chest and the feeling of inevitability, of commitment to what I am doing. It can be experienced by anyone but is certainly sort out by those participating in Xtreme activity. I have read that adrenaline rush can be addictive and I would certainly agree, it’s what kept me doing all the “insane” (according to my wife) activities that I did over the years. The feeling when you push off from that cliff face and start your freefall, you taste the adrenaline on your tongue and feel your body buzzing with energy and strength. I must admit I still miss that excitement and can understand how it can drive people to more and more extreme experiences.

Plain and simply put;  an adrenaline rush is one of the most intense feelings and bodily experience you can have. It is the body’s reaction to fear that stimulates our system to produce chemicals that prepare our bodies for ‘flight or fight’. There are no limits to what can give you an adrenaline rush but life threatening situations is certainly top of that list. Speed is certainly another, which certainly explains our love of going fast, of being the fastest we can be; whether that is abseiling down a mountain or rallying through a desert or racing a yacht through the oceans.

How do you get your Adrenaline Rush – let me know…
